Winner's Circle

Road Victories

Tamie Smith and Sunsprite Syrius made their trip to Greenwood, TX worthwhile with a win of the CIC One-Star in early May. Tamie runs Next Level Eventing in Temecula, a program that's been growing by leaps and bounds along with Tamie's international ambitions. Also having a grand ol' time in Texas were Tamie's daughter Kaylawna Smith and Katie Yozamp, who both earned their first qualifying rounds for the North American Young Riders Championships this summer. There's more travelling ahead for the NLE crew, but first it's the Copper Meadows Horse Trials in Ramona, with its own FEI One- and Two-Star divisions June 5-8. Then, off to The Event at Rebecca Farms in Montana in late July, followed by the Summer Event at Woodside in early August.

Lane Is Livin' Large

Lane Clarke won the $25,000 Land Rover of Pasadena Grand Prix for the second time in three years at the legendary Flintridge Riding Club's Annual Horse Show in late April. This year's win was aboard the stellar mare, Semira de Saulieu, owned by Charlotte Gadbois. The pair is part of Hayden Show Jumping in Laguna Hills, under long-time trainer, Mickey Hayden. The win put Lane in second place for the $265,000 GGT Footing Grand Prix Series after two of nine events this year. In 2013 Lane was named winner of the GGT Series at the Del Mar International World Cup Week.

The latest victory continues Hayden Show Jumping's proud history with Flintridge's big class. In 2012, Lane finished first and third, with Charlotte and Semira de Saulieu in second. Lane was second last year with Kiss The Sky and eighth with Casseur de Prix. In addition to first this year, he rode Kiss The Sky to fifth.

"Flintridge is such a feel-good show with top competitors, tons of history, and a great charity. We are so pleased to have our horses and riders excel here," states Mickey Hayden enthusiastically.

At the Flintridge Spring Classic held the previous week, Lane placed fourth in the $25,000 S&S Bank Card Systems Grand Prix. Fellow Hayden rider, Katie Crampton, aboard her horse Union Jack, took eighth and sits in seventh place in the GGT Series ranking.

Meanwhile, Lane's long win streak continues. He won the $25,000 Surfside Grand Prix with Kiss The Sky and came in second in the $100,000 Grand Prix at the Del Mar National the first weekend of May.

Susie's Roll Continues

May brought another Saturday of show jumping with a storybook ending for California native and Grand Prix veteran Susan Hutchison. Last month, we reported on her big wins with Ziedento at the Blenheim Spring III in mid-April, and she was back at it at Showpark in mid-May. To begin, the decorated rider and her mount SIG Excel added another notch to their extensive victory belt by winning the $7,500 CashCall Mortgage Futurity.  Then Susie set her eyes on the big jumps and the big prize, and once again led the victory gallop aboard St. Bride's Farm's Ziedento in the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle.
