Founders's Notes

Working student Molly Kaster got to show Albert E at the Del Sol Classic. Molly could only show on Sun. and did great earning a blue in the Low Children's, second in the Baby Green Hunters, and fourth in the GSDHJA Mini Medal. It was Molly's first time showing at Del Mar Horsepark on our consignment hunter. Ronnette Leja and I couldn't have been more proud of how well she did and of how hard she works to become a better rider.

I am sad to report the loss of my mom to cancer last month. Evelyn Hatlestad Reynolds died in Florida and I was lucky enough to spend her final two weeks with her. We had a great visit despite the circumstances and had a grand time looking over family photos. She had me get her a Kindle as she loved to read and wanted the challenge of learning how to use it even though the cancer was making it hard for her to manage it. My mom was very creative and independent. She really believed that women could do anything and I'm sure these traits were a huge influence on me and my life. Thanks to everyone that made it possible for me to get to Florida and help her with everything that had to be done.

This month we feature dressage, a discipline I love. I'm the dressage queen at our barn and I love teaching our riders good solid dressage basics. I got to attend last month's California Dreaming Productions CDI up at Blenheim and saw some terrific rides as the talent on the West Coast continues to grow and excel. Don't miss our feature on event manager Regina Antonioli and the Del Mar National Dressage Week's evolution, our report on Olympic gold medalist Charlotte Dujardin's clinic at LAEC and the hot news that 18-year-old Ayden Uhlir has become the first equestrian to become a Nike sponsored athlete. In addition to dressage, we wound up with a bit of a Thoroughbred focus. Check out the stories on three ex-racers excelling in dressage and Buster's remarkable tale of rejection, rescue and reunion!

We thank everyone who joined us for this issue and be sure to keep sending us your story ideas as we continue to bring you the news of the California Horse industry. Next month we feature Spanish Breeds and Barns.

Happy Riding!
