An Easter weekend clinic with top horseman Frank Madden kicked off a season of interesting, educational and/or fun hunter/jumper activities at the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center in Huntington Beach. The action continues with three Benchmark Program Jumper Rallies, starting June 11, four more Seaside Series shows and the Seaside Select Invitational Sport Horse Sale in August. Most of the events are joint ventures between the facility's owner and manager Mary Behrens and Julie Golden, who runs her training stable there and operates HB Horse Shows.
The session with Frank Madden was a particular coup, Julie says, because the East Coast-based trainer has not given a clinic on the West Coast in roughly 10 years. "Frank Madden is an amazing teacher who articulates ideas in a very understandable way," reports trainer Cris Chastain. "The courses were very challenging without undermining a horse and rider's confidence." Junior rider Jose Martin expressed similar enthusiasm: "I enjoyed the clinic immensely. I learned that, although many situations can occur, I must remain calm since my attitude so directly affects my horse. Frank Madden is very positive and very encouraging."
Frank was pleased, too: "The auditors and families were treated to great hospitality. Jumps, footing and crew made my experience a great one." The surprise addition of award winning course designer, Scott Starnes, was an extra bonus for all. As sponsor, helmet manufacturer Charles Owen provided a new helmet to the most improved rider in each section, as chosen by Frank. The clinic was also backed by the United States Hunter Jumper Association which provided rider gift bags, and participants were treated to gifts from Angeles Shoe Polish of Santa Fe Springs and TackZone.com.
The clinic was a perfect fit for the facility and HB Horse Show's goal of providing a fun learning environment for horse, rider and spectator. "We strive to create a relaxed but luxurious venue for the clientele and professionals that support our events," notes Julie. "This is what the clients do for fun. They could go on a vacation or come spend their weekend at HCPEC during an HB Horse Shows event. It is my goal to create events that feel like a vacation!"
More To Come
The Seaside Horse Show Series is the anchor to a busy schedule for the remainder of this year. These top-quality, Orange County Horse Shows Association-rated competitions offer Series Highpoint Awards as well as Series Medal Finals at three different heights. They are designed to provide the best possible learning opportunity for young horses and inexperienced riders by the use of "A" quality jumps, judges, courses and crew at a fraction of A show prices. Upcoming show dates are: June 11-12;
July 8-10; and the Seaside Medal Finals and Seaside Select Invitational Sport Horse Auction,
HB Horse Shows is also hosting Linda Allen's Benchmark Jumper Rallies. "The Benchmark Program is committed to providing a cost effective means of preparing horses and riders for success in the show ring, to assist in the marketing of young horses through reliable performance records, and provide opportunities for junior and amateur riders who do not show extensively to achieve meaningful personal goals in the sport," says course designer Linda Allen, the program's founder. Upcoming Rally dates are: June 11, July 9 and August 26.
Another top East Coast horseman comes to Huntington Beach August 9-10, when Don Stewart visits for a clinic. He is a two-time Chronicle Of The Horse Hunter Horseman of the Year, chairman of the USHJA Junior Hunter Task Force and a highly regarded trainer and judge.
August 27 is the date for the first annual Seaside Select Invitational Sport Horse Auction, sponsored by Equine Insurance and hosted by HB Horse Shows, Swing City Auctions and HCPEC. Thirty qualified jumper prospects will be offered in the sale.
