It has always been the dream of Craig and Anne Clermont to run a horse business; they just happened to take the scenic route to get there. But regardless of how long the journey took, the pair could not be more pleased with Clermont Equestrian at Cypress Ridge on the San
“We took this roundabout route to get here,” explains Anne. A fourth generation horseman, her husband, Craig grew up in Canada competing in Grand Prixs at Spruce Meadows. He was the leading Canadian rider at the 1991 North American Young Rider’s Championships and trained with two-time World Cup Champion Ian Miller and Olympic gold medalist Pete Raymakers.
Anne continues, “Craig competed in several World Cup qualifiers, but then got out of the horse arena so-to-speak. I grew up riding dressage and have a degree in animal biology (with a specialization in animal nutrition and horse management from the University of Guelph in Canada). But instead of working with horses, I was pursuing a top career in research. The entire time, both of us kept thinking something was missing.”
It was a serendipitous opportunity that led the pair to own Clermont Equestrian at Cypress Ridge, and they jumped at the opportunity. Now Anne and Craig are busy trying to keep everything balanced as they search for new trainers welcoming new clientele and enjoying their new top-notch facility.

Come As You Are
“Now we are trying to strike a balance between having a proper, professional program and still having fun,” says Anne. “Our goal is to create a place where nature, horses and people become the best they can be. We want to develop horses, and thus riders that can go all the way, but still be a facility were people can come to get away from it all. You should be able to work hard, and still have fun.”
Cypress Ridge is set on 136 sprawling acres, and offers visitors a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. The facility boasts a 240’ x 180’ covered and lighted arena with top-quality footing, a large outdoor sand arena, 22 outdoor paddocks with shelters, a newly renovated 32 stall barn as well as a 12 stall barn.
Almost 80 percent of the time, Anne says Cypress Ridge is above the fog. Also there are fewer mosquitoes and flies at their higher altitude. They provide a personalized and continually-monitored feeding program, up to four feedings of top-quality hay each day, grain feeding twice a day, as well as a turn-out service, a blanketing service and a monthly vital sign check. While Craig and Anne offer training, and are currently recruiting other professional trainers in multiple disciplines, equestrians are not required to be in training to board at Cypress Ridge.
“We welcome anyone that has a passion for horses,” says Anne. “Any discipline is welcome—dressage, western, hunter and jumpers—we believe everyone should have the opportunity to follow their dreams.”
