CVC Shavings
Family business has been reliably
delivering shavings for 21 years

by Kathleen Burke Jensen

The parent company of CVC Shavings of Fresno is Gene Hull Trucking, Inc., a family business founded in 1986. In 1995 husband and wife team Gene and LeeAnn Hull expanded their trucking business to four units and by the end of 1998 had grown to a company of 13 units. They now have a fleet of 33 sets of double trailers and 20 tractors and sub haulers that are specifically designed for the shavings products they haul and sell.

Ten years ago Gene started a sales division called Central Valley Commodities (CVC) with the goal to service their customers better by eliminating the middle man. In the past, shavings had been bought from saw mills and sold to barns through commodities traders. These traders then had to rely on contract trucking firms to pick up and deliver the product. “We had four sets of trailers and I noticed that there was a market to sell to the consumer,” Gene explains. “The niche was having the truck and trailers to pick up the shavings at the saw mill and deliver direct to consumer. So we took the commodities philosophy and married it to a trucking company.”

This year alone Gene Hull Trucking, Inc. will sell and transport over 850,000 yards of shavings, rice hulls, spent race track straw, woodchips and other sawmill by-products throughout California and Oregon. Customers include horse ranches, feed stores, race tracks and fairgrounds as well as horse shows.

Gene married LeeAnn, his high school sweetheart, 24 years ago and they, with Armando Macias, run this family owned business. “Because of the integrity of our business we’ve never burned bridges or owed money and that has a lot to do with our success.”

As construction decreases and smaller sawmills close, new customers are turning to CVC Shavings. Since they’ve built a sizable business that works with the larger sawmills and controls the entire cycle of the shavings from sawmill to barn, customers can be confident that their order will be filled and delivered on time. “We deliver when we say we will,” says Gene with confidence.

If a customer needs shavings in bulk, Gene will pick them up at the mill and then deliver them directly to the customer’s facility. And if a customer needs shavings bagged, Gene Hull Trucking, Inc. picks up the shavings at the mill, takes them to the bagging machine and then delivers it to the customer’s facility bagged. This makes CVC Shavings California’s largest provider of shavings whether customers need “bulk or bags” because they do both.
