UC Davis’ first two Intercollegiate Dressage Association shows of the season went smoothly at Cal Poly San Louis Obispo’s newly renovated facility on the weekend of Nov. 3-4.

Like other collegiate equestrian leagues, athletes competing in IDA shows have 10 minutes to warm up a randomly-assigned host team’s horse before entering the court to complete a test.

Each representing team is composed of four riders, with up to two additional riders allowed to compete as individuals. Athletes compete at Introductory level (introductory tests A and B), Lower level (Introductory test C and Training level test 1), Upper level (Training level tests 2 and 3), and First level (First level test 1 and 2). At the conclusion of six shows, teams and individuals with the highest four placements are eligible to compete at IDA Nationals.

On Saturday, five UC Davis riders competed successfully in their divisions. Highlights include Senior Sheila Hines earning second place in Upper level, Junior Katie Mednick earning third place after breaking a tied score with a Stanford rider in Lower level, and Sophomore Madison Main earning first place in introductory level.

On Sunday, six UC Davis riders competed, the sixth overcoming a 104 degree fever that sidelined him the previous day. Highlights from the second day include Junior Ariel Van Dell earning second place in First level, Senior Sheila Hines earning first place in Upper level, Sophomore Manuel Sousa earning second place in Upper level, and Sophomore Olivia Clouser earning second place in Lower level.

UC Davis currently stands in second place as a team, following Stanford.

The UC Davis Dressage team is coached by Lynae Orsmby at the UC Davis Equestrian Center. UC Davis will be hosting a home show on February 16-17, 2019. The team also hosts quarterly fundraising schooling shows that are open to the public.
