A good year will be celebrated during Jan. 12 banquet.

The 2018 GSDHJA Championship Show was packed with fun events and special classes, and with over 300 horse entered, it was a busy week! Additional sponsorships help provide some nice improvements such as viewing tents, and box seats were available in the grandstand. Cunningham & Cunningham Equine Insurance was the title sponsor, and they hosted the Exhibitor Welcome Party, while Across The Rails Riding Academy and Jasmin Stair Stables hosted the Pizza Party, and Concord Equestrian Center hosted the Ice Cream Social.

Medal Finals are an important part of the horse show, and Saturday evening kicked them off with the Flat Medal with 43 entries divided into four sections, then a ride-off of the top group. The Flat Medal Final was won by Skylar Wireman, trained by Lisa Halterman and Shayne Wireman. Sunday was a full day of Finals in the Grandstand, starting with the Jr/Am Medal. Skylar Wireman also won the 3’3” Jr/Am Medal Final on Sunday morning. Next was the 3’ Medal, which was won by Molly Hutchison, trained by Hailey Flowers. The 2’9” Child/Adult Medal followed, and was won by Hannah McGill, trained by Graeme Dixon. The afternoon finished with the 2’6” Mini Medal, which was won by Martha McKenna, trained by Tara Bemoll. The Adult Medal was held in the San Diego Arena, and was won by Dani Carroll, trained by Emily Esau Williams.

The Green Rider Medal was the highlight in the Durante Arena, and was won by Heather Weckel, trained by Wanda Weldy. Between all the jumping medals on Sunday, 134 riders competed in the Finals!

The GSDHJA Awards Banquet is Saturday Jan. 12 at the Bahia Resort in Mission Bay. Hundreds of trophies and year-end awards will be presented that evening, and everyone’s hard work and accomplishments will be celebrated!

Locals In Las Vegas

GSDHJA was invited to nominate riders to compete in the Affiliate divisions at the Aon/USHJA National Championships at the Las Vegas National in November. The association offered the opportunity to our top point earners in the 2’ and 2’6” divisions, and we ended up with five representatives.

The show was beautifully done, and gave these local riders a chance to feel special with beautiful presentations in the ring, a ring master calling each class to start with his horn, and the beautiful jumps and arena! The show was at the beautiful South Point Hotel, and there were many fun things to do outside of the show. I saw many young riders enjoying the bowling alley, among other things. And they had the opportunity to watch special classes such as the FEI World Cup Qualifier!

Our 2’ representatives were Emilie Melnychuk on Aragon, and Kaitlyn Hradnansky on Spike the Punch. Emilie earned the Championship, winning two classes in the division! And Kaitlyn won the Under Saddle, and was awarded a Sportsmanship Award!

The 2’6” representatives were Noah Kai Nelson and Holy Smokes, Ryenne Willson and Happy Hour, and Laurence Huntley and Tradecraft. Noah earned the Res Championship, and won a jumping class. And Ryenne also won a jumping class, and Laurence won several good ribbons.

GSDHJA awarded each rider a grant to help pay for some of the expense of attending the National Championships, and we are so proud of their accomplishments in representing our Association. Congratulations to all! And thank you to USHJA for giving these local riders a place in their Championships!
