August 2015 - European Style Auction

Pacific Sporthorse Selection Returns to Northern California Aug. 29-30

The 4th Annual Pacific Sporthorse Selection (PSS) is only a few weeks away and it promises to be an exceptional event again this year. PSS has become one of the most important equestrian events on the West Coast as Dressage, H/J and Eventing enthusiasts make their way to Vacaville to enjoy a weekend of fun and education.

In addition to being the largest sporthorse sale in the West, PSS has modeled its sale after the traditional sporthorse auctions in Europe. The elite collection of horses is selected by professional judges and after a complete vet check by U.C. Davis, the horses are professionally trained by FEI level riders for a minimum of 5 weeks – many for much longer. Horses are available for buyers to test ride for 2 weeks prior to the auction.

This approach provides buyers with a large collection of quality, pre-vetted horses from which to choose their dream horse. Buyers can also take advantage of the U.C. Davis vet, Dr. Sarah le Jeune, who will be available to discuss x-rays & pre-purchase on any of the horses. For those buyers who have experienced the frustration of travelling long distances in search of their next horse or the disappointment of finding a great horse who then fails the pre-purchase exam, those issues are in the past. The PSS auction brings sound, quality horses together in one place for discriminating buyers to evaluate.

This year’s collection of riding horses includes some lovely horses from the West Coast and Canada as well as many fancy imports from Europe. Bloodlines include Sir Donnerhall, Fürst Rousseau, De Champ, Dancier, and Don Romantic to name just a few. The entire collection will be presented one week before the auction in a public viewing on Sunday, Aug. 23rd at 9:00am. Videos of all the horses will be up on the website after Aug. 10th at

Buyers interested in trying any of the horses should contact the PSS team to schedule an appointment.

For those guests interested in a little continuing education, there is PSS University, an educational symposium co-hosted by the Sacramento Valley Chapter of CDS and the PSS team. This year’s guest speakers include FEI-O Dressage judge and former US dressage team coach, Anne Gribbons as well as FEI-O Jumping Course Designer and I-Judge in Jumping, Linda Allen. These two world class professionals will give auditors some great tips and tools to take home at the end of the weekend.  In addition, some interesting veterinary health care talks on ulcers and cutting edge research in sporthorses are scheduled. Last but certainly not least, Master Saddler Jochen Schleese will give a demonstration on correct saddle fitting using a live horse and chalk to illustrate equine anatomy. Auditors need to pre-register on line at Lunch is provided.

The weekend would not be complete without the festive Gala Evening Pink Ribbon Fundraiser!  Held on Saturday, Aug. 29th at 4:00pm, the Gala is a wine and cheese tasting party highlighted by exciting equestrian performances. The fundraiser benefits The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In past years, stud services to world class stallions like Sandro Hit, Sir Donnerhall, and Don Frederico have been auctioned off for charity at the gala. Whether or not you want to bid on a stud service, this part of the weekend should not be missed! To date, donations made by PSS to charity have exceeded $20,000! Tickets for the Gala Fundraiser may be purchased online:

Whether you are in the market for a new horse or interested in continuing education or you want to enjoy a glass of wine with good friends and beautiful horses, be sure to mark your calendar for Aug. 29th and 30th.  The PSS 2015 should not be missed!  There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy.
