DONATIONS/VOLUNTEER/HORSE BOARDING
11-7-07
Dear Friends at Riding Magazine
The WELSH PONY AND COB ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA as a club would like to offer help those effected by this catastrophic event. Your web site has been so helpful, as it has been so frustrating to get up to date info as the press has already moved on to other stories and as horse owners we know this disaster will effect many for months and years to come, especially to those who have to rebuild their lives from the ashes.
It must be difficult because of the scope of this disaster to organize a relief effort to the thousands of those effected, and so we are looking to your publication as a beginning point as you all have access to information in S.Cal, and hopefully because you are a publication in the effected area you have the unique ability to hopefully provide the rest of us with practical “how to help”. Even if other clubs or organizations might have already begun to mount a relief effort, it would be so helpful “to be pointed” in the right direction.
Thank you for the invaluable service that you have given to the equine community ofCalifornia. Our hearts are with all those who suffered untold grief & heart ache from this national tragedy.
Kind Regards,
Sue Yee

Please put the word out that I will be donating services for animals and people that have been injured and or traumatized by the firestorms. Stress reduction and energetic healing techniques can be done via telephone typically in a few minutes with excellent results. I recently returned from a trip to Texas A&M where I presented these techniques to the holistic vet group there. Cheryl, if you're feeling stressed, having difficulty breathing, tired, overwhelmed, give me a call and I'll show you. I've been using this left and right with remarkable results. Take care and God bless, Susan Stoltz

I want to let people know that I have room for horses in a pasture and a couple of corrals. Have plenty of room for tying to trailers, portable corrals etc. As well as rigs, motorhomes, people can bring their dogs etc.
Also, if people need to board horses while dealing with rebuilding. I am more than happy to do so.

As the fires have affected equestrians throughout S. California, not just San Diego, I wanted to let folks in the LA area know that I have space for evacuated horses at my home in Sylmar.
I have 5 temporary 12X16 and 12X12 stalls available. I also have a couple livestock pens for goats, llamas, etc. as well if need be. There are a couple of 14X12 box stalls available in the barn. I also have private space for a couple friendly dogs in a fenced dog run in my side yard. I have a 60X80 turnout/arena, washrack, and feed grass hay twice a day.
My 3-horse gooseneck is hooked up and ready to roll if someone needs to have their horse hauled (and no, I don't mind hauling to/from San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Kern County areas). I also have a 2-horse straight load and another truck available to haul...the 2 horse trailer is warmblood sized (7'6" inside height). So basically, I can handle mini's up to warmblood size equines comfortably in my trailers and stalls.
I am in Rancho Cascades area of Sylmar between Yarnell and Roxford (easy access from 210 or 5 freeways). I had a half dozen evacuated horses from the fires in Castaic and Santa Clarita that were staying with me this week but all have now left to return home so the stalls are available again.

Castle Creek Ranch is doing fine. On the boarder of Valley Center/Bonsal/North Escondido we are in a protected area and gratefully none of the fires were even close to us.
Our network of horse people stayed in communication and were constantly ready to juggle locations in San Marcos Trainer's Row, Temecula, Norco, and other areas to move horses around if the fire were to shift.
Thanks go to Jennifer Bryant, Brigitte Garrett, Bonnie at Vessel's, Jeannie Schell in Pauma, and all the rest of the women in our network for making calls and getting people together for evacuation havens for our equine charges all over San Diego County and Riverside County. the horse community really came together on this fire!
We have 12 barn stalls available as well as 6 mare motel stalls and several large turnouts for those needing places to board.
Our new website should be up this week. The last of our evacuation horses should be home tomorrow and we can concentrate on getting back to a normal routine and prepare for our next open barn event in December!

I have my dependable old ranch truck and time so I can help move and haul feed and equipment in. Insured, but not currently registered (maybe they'd forgive me under the circumstances). More importantly, I have room for a displaced person, couple, or two with their own or borrowed motor homes, to move into my back yard on Crest in Encinitas with their horses (right now a single large 30' by 100' pipe pen which could be subdivided). Short term free, Long term very reasonable.

Dee Gleason of Del Rio Farms reports that they are OK in Fallbrook.
They too also evacuated to the Vessels Ranch -a top Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse breeding / training stable in Bonsall.
Dee said, "They treated us like family, they were very generous and giving.
When we had to evacuate they showed up with their Vessels rig. The got us out of there, fed us, we were like refugees in heaven. They were all so wonderful down to the very last mucker. There are not enough superlatives to describe those people. In situations like this heroes emerge. Thank you Vessles Ranch.
Dee also would like to extend an offer to those that are in need of facilities for their horses.

A client in Eucalyptus Hills (Lakeside) has offered his three corrals and one acre pasture for fire victims – long or short term – at no charge. He will feed morning and night and is willing to have a needing party make minor changes to the property to make it safe for their horses. Also, another client has offered room for horses in Japatul Valley for a small boarding fee. If there is a need for short or long term horse boarding for our East County neighbors, let me know and I’ll get phone numbers out to whomever is in need.

all of the ranches in the Tijuana River Valley have taken in evacuated horses -- I understand we have about 350 now. Several truckloads (tons) of bermuda and alfalfa we were anticipating have not made it through, either because of road closures, or because they have been unable to offload what's on their trucks now and go back for ours! Everyone is running out of hay, and could really, really use donations to help feed everyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you...

VOLUNTEER HELP! - 10-25-07
I know that there is a lady named Crystal who owns and runs Sandia Creek Farm which is located in the path of the fire. Crystal teaches hunter/jumper and her daughter teaches 3-day eventing. They house rescue horses from the premarin farms and have raised, trained and found loving homes for them. They currently have all of their horses at Galway and are going crazy trying to keep the horses fed, watered and stalls cleaned! Any volunteer help in that area would be greatly appreciated I understand!

CSHA Region 7 has not verified any of the previous emails that have made requests for cash donations in regards to horses in need due to the Southern California fires. These were emails that were originated outside of CSHA Region 7 and forwarded with the intention of distributing information only.
Everyone should be careful of fake requests for money. Unfortunately it does happen. Sometimes, people will scam kind-hearted folks into donating. It is very important that supporters verify that it's a legit request that is really helping horses / people in need.
One of our members did a little research and found that ANY humane society (ASPCA) will take donations and put them to use for animals in need. This agency will deliver hay and offers other services as well and can get permission to get through road blocks when others can't. Anyone in need of emergency hay or other services for horses or animals can find help with these agencies.
Please be careful of possible scams and contact your local ASPCA or humane society for more information.

A Call to Action: Southern California Wild Fires
Donate Now to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund
By Brian Sosby
Lexington, KY—Over the last few days, the Southern California area has been engulfed in flames caused by wild fires aggravated by the Santa Ana winds. These winds that annually cross the Southern California area have been much stronger than usual, making an already dry area even more prone to catastrophe. These fires have spread quickly over the weekend and ravaged the region.
San Diego County has seen widespread evacuations as a result of the fires. Nearly one-million people have been asked to leave the area as of today. President Bush has declared the situation a Federal emergency. Many evacuees have sought shelter at local community centers and schools, but the largest number—more than 10,000 people—has made Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego their temporary housing.
The situation is particularly difficult for those with large animals. Evacuating and housing horses has its own set of concerns. According to national media reports, the fairground in San Diego County is currently boarding 2,000 horses, with many others finding refuge from the fires where any safe space can be found, including mall parking lots. Some horses have been moved several times due to the widespread fires.
In response to past disasters and in hopes of assisting in future ones, the United States Equestrian Federation established the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund and is now requesting contributions from individuals and organizations wishing to assist those in the Southern California area.
Money donated to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund assists equines of any breed that find themselves victims of disasters, including but not restricted to hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards and fires. The money will be held by USEF in an account restricted for this purpose and disbursed only upon authorization of the USEF Chief Executive Officer.
“During situations like this, it’s imperative that we gather forces to assist in any way possible,” said USEF Chief Executive Officer John Long. “Thankfully, the weather forecasts are good. However, Southern California just experienced the largest evacuation of residents in our country’s history. Of course, that has had an impact on the countless horses that call that part of the state home. The Federation wants to do what it can to assist those horses and owners.”
Donations may be made online at www.usef.org by clicking on the following hyperlink –https://www.usef.org/_AUAIFrames/DisasterRelief/DisasterRelief.aspx. If you wish to contribute to the effort by check, please make it out to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund and mail it to: The United States Equestrian Federation, 4047 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511.

Hay shortage: Donations needed
Posted @ 8:12 AM - 10-25-07
Ranches in the Tijuana River Valley (Imperial Beach/Nestor) have taken in hundreds of evacuated horses, but now we're facing a hay shortage.
The ranch where I work (Sun Coast Farms at 2550 Monument Rd) is going through 50+ bales a day...there are a dozen other ranches in the area in the same boat. Truckloads of hay coming from the Imperial Valley have been unable to get through this week, and several area feed stores have burned in the fires.
If you have bermuda or alfalfa available, or know someone who does, please email me!
Delivered would definitely be best, but we can send a truck & trailer if all the roads are open to get there. We'd GREATLY appreciate donations to offset the cost of hundreds of additional mouths to feed. Please contact Emma Spurling, 619-252-4485 or Maria Siebrand, 619-865-9514 ( vaquera@san.rr.com ).
Thank you for helping us get the word out!
