The 36th Annual Foxfield Medal Finals and the 28th Annual Junior/Amateur Jumping Derby were held Oct. 6-7 at the lovely riding facility owned by JoAnn and Bill Postel and Nancy Turrill.
As you turn off Potrero Road in Westlake Village and enter through the stone pillars onto the main drive you are immediately struck with the beauty of surrounding oak trees in the hunt field. People always comment that you feel like you have stepped back in time and have found a secret niche nestled in the hillside. You are greeted by the volunteer group of Boy Scouts who efficiently direct you to the available parking spaces. Once you step out of your vehicle the journey begins as you walk across a narrow footbridge that guides you into the main area of the horse show.

One of the most unique features of this event is the fact that almost all of the manpower to organize, set up and run the show is done by volunteers. Many have grown up here at Foxfield and others are second and third generation equestrians.
It truly is a family affair, where friends congregate to enjoy the show and catch up with acquaintances of long ago. The announcer, paddock steward, judges’ secretaries: literally everyone noted on the first page of the program has some tie to Foxfield. That is really quite unique and gives the exhibitors and their supporters a great sense of comfort. Julie Bradley and Barbi McCoy take time off from their busy careers to be a part of the show team; they won the medal finals in 1985 and 1986 respectively.
This two-day event is really one of a kind here in Southern California. The participants are put to the test with challenging courses that weave in and out of the main arena and back up through the adjacent hunt field. JoAnn puts her personal touch on everything and gives great attention to detail and care.
There are the flower boutonnières for the medal finalists, a luncheon to celebrate their accomplishments, and wonderful awards for the top 10. The following day is the exciting Jumping Derby, which leads to great thrills and some spills as well! All in all it is truly a fun outing with the feel of a country fair that offers something for all family members.

The Foxfield Medal winners were Jenny Terry riding Candeur in the 18-35 division, and Yvette Lang-Einzig riding Jalapeno in the 36 and over class. Laura Mormann and Kappy Appleby were the reserve champions in the younger and older age brackets, respectively. The Medal Finals’ Overall Grand Champion was Jenny Terry, with reserve going to Yvette Lang-Einzig.
Former Foxfield student Hannah Selleck riding Cirka Z won the Junior/Amateur Jumping Derby and Jessie White and Another Cat took top honors in the Open Jumping Derby.
