At the age of 2, Pat Roberts fell in love with horses and thus began a lifelong romance. Born and raised in California, she has spent the majority of her life training and showing these magnificent animals.
Pat, who says she has had no formal training, has attended workshops given by artists she admires and credits them with keeping her true to her own style. Sometimes described as whimsical and humorous, her work is also considered life-like with a touch of impressionism. Pat likes to spend time capturing and creating the ambience of both the Old and New West in her sculptures of charros, buckaroos, modern-day cowboys and old-time Western ladies who rode sidesaddle.

“Horses and sculpture are all about movement,” explains Pat. “As an artist, I strive to capture a moment in time by turning bronze into a seemingly living, breathing being in the eye of the beholder.”
Pat was recently awarded Best of Show at the 2007 Spirit of the Horse Art Competition and Expo in Rancho Palos Verdes, for her sculpture Equus In Flight. This is the second time Pat has been awarded Best of Show, the previous time was for her sculpture Equus: The Flight Animal at the Lompoc Valley Art Competition. Pat has also exhibited at the 2007 Cowgirl Up!, the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg, AZ, the Peppertree Art Show in Santa Ynez, Cattlemen’s Western Art Show in Paso Robles, Ladies First Show in Los Olivos, Cast in Bronze Show also in Los Olivos, Women Artists of the West Show in Visalia, the Golden State Sculptors Annual Juried Show in Santa Monica, the Ojai Museum of Art and the Elverhoj Museum in Solvang.
She has also exhibited at the Osborne Gallery in London and at the Castle Norvenich in Aachen, Germany as the only USA artist represented. Her sculpture is part of the permanent collections at the Kentucky Horse Park and in the European Museum of Art, in several world corporate headquarters and can be found in 13 countries. Pat has been in featured USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, in Equine Vision, Western Horseman, Z Magazine (Europe), Santa Barbara Seasons, Horses in Art, Women & Horses and Of Women and Horses: More Expressions of the Magical Bond, by GaWaNi Pony Boy.
Pat and her husband, Monty, live in the Santa Ynez Valley on a beautiful horse farm, Flag Is Up Farms, where her studio is in the middle of their kitchen. With Monty on the road, Pat has been up to more than just sculpting at Flag Is Up Farms. The Roberts, including their daughter Laurel, have been working to create the model quarantine facility.
Creating the Model Facility
Together Monty and Pat have made it their life quest to leave the world a better place for horses and people. Monty travels the world spreading the message of non-violence up to 10 months per year, so he is rarely home to enjoy his ranch. During his travels, Pat remains on site managing the numerous farm activities and the Monty Roberts International Learning Center. This fall they are one step closer to completing that quest.
A brand-new USDA-approved quarantine facility is now completed, with 12 stalls, a six-horse loose exerciser, wash rack, turnouts, security fencing and round-the-clock professional care on-site. Monty’s expertise as a horse behaviorist combined with Pat’s artistic input, ensure that these facilities are designed so the horses preparing to travel will be able to relax and enjoy their quarantine period while maintaining their physical environment through daily exercise, rather than suffer the unnatural consequences of a limited exercise area.
Two horse exercisers are being imported to Flag Is Up Farms and are manufactured by the premier German company Rower and Rub. These loose walkers will have Otto Sport footing installed to enhance equine safety and comfort, as well as in the three existing round pens, and 12 outside pens.
Having spent her childhood growing up on Flag Is Up Farms with her sister and brother, Laurel is excited about the prospect of contributing to its continued success. An acclaimed equine property designer, she is always on the lookout for revolutionary new designs and together they have discovered exciting opportunities to further improve Flag Is Up Farms.
Flag Is Up Farms already boasts stabling and turnouts for over 150 horses on grass and sand paddocks, three outdoor round pens, two covered round pens, a large outdoor arena, a 24,000 square foot covered riding arena, a 5/8th mile training track, a cutting and reining horse training facility, as well as an AquaTred for swimming horses during rehabilitation. The facility is open to the public with no fee or reservation required for visitors, and Monty and Pat plan to provide the public with educational displays explaining the strength and versatility of these advanced technologies being employed at the Farm.
