“When we came out with Black-As-Knight 20 years ago, there was nothing like it on the market,” explains August Anderson, owner of Cheval International. “It was the ‘original’ coat enhancer. It all started because I had a black horse that was faded and couldn’t find any products on the market to darken his coat.”

In addition to Black-As-Knight, Cheval also has three other coat enhancers available: Gold-As-Sun for palominos, duns and buckskins; White-As-Snow for grey and light color horses and this summer Cheval launched Red-D-Vinity. Red-D-Vinity is specially formulated to bring out the red gleam in the coats of chestnut, sorrel, red roans and red pinto horses.
“It (Red-D-Vinity) makes the red color really pop,” says August. “You put a horse on Red-D-Vinity out with a whole herd of chestnuts and that chestnut will still standout. The red in his coat will just gleam in comparison.”
August knows all about how well Cheval’s coat enhancers truly work, and not just because of the hundreds of emails and letters she receives, but because her five FEI horse are all on them. She is proud to say that Cheval’s complete line of holistic and all-natural products are tested on animals, and not just any animals, her own horses. After all, how can she recommend a product if she hasn’t tried it?
The key to Cheval’s success lies in their product ingredients, explains August. “A lot of other coat enhancers use soy, but we ground up the soy and hay used in our products. This helps the bloodstream carry the nutrients across the cell wall. We also own a strip of land in South Dakota where we grow our hay, so we know exactly were all the ingredients in our products come from.”
Another of Cheval International’s new products is Cush-A-Way, an herbal supplement that helps alleviate many of the symptoms of Cushings Disease in horses. It uses many of the same ingredients as their coat enhancers, which help horses shed out, as well as ginger and probiotics to sooth the gastro intestinal tract. Cush-A-Way also contains Ester Cs and other strong antioxidants which suppress histamines and ease the symptoms of laminitis.
“We were shocked to know there were so many horses out there with Cushings. The numbers have greatly increased since 20 years ago and we are receiving great feedback about Cush-A-Way, but the product I am most excited about is our new book, Lioness. It’s a political thriller, filled with romance and intrigue.”
Cheval International has several others books, but this is their first world-wide book release. Like their coat enhancers and other all-natural products, Cheval International’s book line began with a small local distribution and has grown to an international juggernaut. August estimated from sales, that each month they sell over 100,000 of Black-As-Knight, and that number keeps going up.
