Horse Therapy Legislation Introduced in the House

On April 24, 2013, Representatives Michael Burgess (R-CA) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) introduced The Rehabilitative Therapy Parity for Military Beneficiaries Act of 2013 (H.R. 1705). This legislation would amend federal law to provide that military families and wounded veterans are entitled to be reimbursed for therapies, including "therapies provided on a horse" that are medically authorized. Equidae Performance at San Diego County Fair

Equidae will present four entertaining half-hour performances during the San Diego County Fair on June 22 and 23, 2013. Shows are during the Fair at 1:30pm and 4:30pm daily at the San Diego Arena (SD Arena), behind the Del Mar Arena. The Equidae Performance features two former employees of the Valitar Show which shut down at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Nov. 2012, leaving performers and horses stranded in what has been a continuing drama for San Diego. Supporters and fans will enjoy seeing this special Fair performance which is included in the price of the San Diego Fair admission. House Appropriations Committee Votes to Block Horse Slaughter From Resuming on U.S. Soil

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has voted to block funding for inspections at prospective horse slaughter plants, which if it survives the entire legislative process, would halt any effort to resume slaughter for these animals on U.S. soil. The committee backed, by a voice vote, an amendment to the agriculture appropriations bill offered by Reps. Jim Moran, D-Va., and Bill Young, R-Fla., to forbid spending by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on inspections U.S. horse slaughter plants in Fiscal Year 2014. A similar spending prohibition was put in place in 2005, however, it was not renewed in 2011, leading to the opportunity for horse slaughter plants to reopen in the U.S at the estimated annual expense of 5 million taxpayer dollars.
