Equine Beauty: A Study of Horses, by Raphael Macek.

This compelling book by Raphael Macek manages to be an artistic tribute to the horse's aesthetic splendor in addition to conveying these proud beasts' imposing personalities. Macek's carefully crafted images-each a finely honed work of art with great originality and consummate style-capture the depth of these stunning animals' many moods. This collection features both close-ups and complete figures against the backdrops of exquisite landscapes. The photographer's balanced composition and skillful lighting highlight the form, texture and muscularity of each unique creature.

Photographer Raphael Macek was born in 1981 in Brazil. Hailing from a family deeply involved in the breeding of various breeds of horses, it's no wonder that Macek has an abiding passion for all things equine-an affinity that is strongly evident in his images. An enthusiastic photographer since his teenage years, his personal vision was refined and developed at the renowned New York Institute of Photography.

His career as a visual artist has taken him to a range of incredible destinations around the globe, and his images have been published in Germany, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. Now based in his native Brazil, he has been asked to profile some of the finest stud farms and equestrian contests worldwide-including the honor of being Brazil's official photographer at the 2012 Olympics. His coveted fine art photography is displayed in galleries internationally.

Released this month, the hardcover book has 208 pages, 150 photographs and retails for $75.

Shining With Style

After a few months of using Ponytail's Bubbles & Bucks shampoo and the Show Pony Shine leave-on treatment, this reporter's normally unspectacular hair underwent a terrific transformation. My slightly brittle locks now emerge shiny and smooth and swing easily into simple hair-dos with a just-left-the-salon look and feel. These products really perform, but I have to admit my favorite thing about the Ponytail line is the scent. It hints of all the barn's best smells: hay, leather, that "je ne sais quoi" quality, but not so strongly that anybody else, like my horse-averse teenage boys, would notice.

We hear the young, Los Angeles based Ponytail Products is working on gift packages just in time for the holidays.
