Letter to the Editor

I was so glad to see California Riding Magazine's coverage of the slaughterhouse issue the December magazine. I saw action generated from the December Los Angeles Times slaughterhouse article in the form of a cash donation given to me by a friend, who knows I'm in the horse world, asking me to put it to where it would do some good. (Laughing Pony Rescue in Rancho Santa Fe was the recipient.)

I'm thinking this slaughterhouse publicity might be the opportunity to make a difference. I have a memory from my teen years of actually taking a pony to the slaughterhouse. (Don't know why I didn't have it in me back then to just refuse my boss, but I did what I was told.) I still vividly remember that poor little thing. She was quite sick and not responding to veterinary care. But, as we pulled the trailer into the slaughterhouse yard, she rallied the gumption to start to act up. And unloading her, she became absolutely wild. I could smell the blood at the place and I know she could, too. What a cruel way to end her life.

And as I write this, I'm again so sorry for the part I played in this. And surely there is a better way to bring these animals to rest without trauma at the end. We have a responsibility to care for these creatures to the best of our ability. If you have an interest in doing something, please do contact me. I think my remorse is spurring me to action. (Thanks in advance for your forgiveness.)
