John McConnell Loses Three Horses In Trailer Fire
A tragic trailering accident claimed the lives of three horses in New Mexico. Grand Prix rider John McConnell and his brother, Bill, were shipping eight horses the night of April 27 from McConnell’s home farm at the McElvain family’s Rancho Corazon in Lemitar, NM, to the Del Mar Horse Show. In the middle of the night, the rear tires of the semi rig caught fire outside of Lemitar.
John and Bill tried save the horses as flames raged and they succeeded in unloading four. When the flames hindered additional rescue efforts they opened the back door in hopes the horses would jump out. One did, but the three remaining horses were lost. The fire department arrived at 2 a.m.
Lost in the fire were Carolina, Air Force and Candilagos. The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the outpouring of concern from the horse community.

Four World Cup Qualifiers Hosted at Thermal
HITS will again offer a covered competition arena for the four World Cup Qualifiers at the 2010 HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal. The World Cup events will take place at DC II, III, IV and VI during the 2010 season.
The covered arena was originally erected at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal for the 2008 season at the request of the West Coast Active Riders, in order to have a competition setting similar to what riders would be challenged with at the FEI World Cup Finals. In its inaugural and second year, the covered arena at Thermal enjoyed wide-spread praise from the top high-performance riders in the sport.
