Sue Eoff: Waltzing Horses
Sales is the focus for
veteran trainer at Sterling Farms.

USDF certified trainer and instructor Sue Eoff likes challenges and her latest has been the test of trusting that, “when things appear to be
falling apart, they are actually falling into place,” she says. A recent shift in circumstances has inspired Sue to “embrace change and look at it as an opportunity to improve or grow one’s business (or life) approach,” comments the philosophical horsewoman.

The transition came in her role at Sterling Farms in San Diego’s Bonsall/Vista area. The veteran trainer and rider moved to Southern California from her longtime Bay Area base four years ago and settled into Sterling Farms two years ago. At Sterling Farms, she partnered with Bill and Jane Frank to develop their breeding program for excellent quality dressage horses and to run her own sales/training business, Waltzing Horses. “After a hard look at the breeding business, the decision was made to disperse the entire herd,” Sue explains of recent developments. Broodmares, 2-year-olds and yearlings are available and can be viewed at www.waltzinghorses.com.

In the meantime, Sue will continue with her focus on sales, an endeavor for which she has received many kudos from appreciative buyers and sellers.

One of Sue’s current sale horses, Samartine (Samarant/Danny Wilde).
Samartine is a handsome 2008 Oldenburg colt with lovely gaits and is handled daily. He is going to mature into a sizeable sport horse.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Sue from both the buying and selling perspective,” says one such happy customer, Mary Woloson of Las Vegas. “I have found her integrity in representing the horses outstanding. I purchased my ‘dream horse’ from her and I had the comfort of knowing that the mare she sold for me went to a perfectly matched new owner. I believe that her ability to match horses with buyers and keep her deep commitment to the horses’ well being is unprecedented in the horse sales and training industry.

“Sue is very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with,” Mary continues. “She makes sure that she covers all details and answers all questions. Her follow-up is outstanding. I have recommended her to several friends and will continue to sing her praises to those with a shared love of horses.”

Healthy Sales Market

In spite of the current economic times, Sue feels confident and optimistic that there is an ongoing market for horses. “I am not noticing a big shift in selling horses, since there is a tribe of us out here who are addicted to horses and will find a way to keep them in our lives. What I have noticed is that I have to continue to be very proactive about advertising (online, website, flyers, word of mouth, etc.), representing fairly-priced horses with accurate histories, and willing to work with everyone on pricing.”

“Thoughtful objective placement” has always been an emphasis at Waltzing Horses. “The goal is more of a match-making service, so the horse, buyer and seller all end up satisfied for the long term,” Sue explains.

This horse was recently sold to a happy customer!

Located just 10 minutes inland from Oceanside, Sterling Farms is a quiet, private facility that provides oversized stalls, full care, daily turnout and excellent footing in the arena. Sue has been fortunate to assemble a team of people, including veterinarians, farrier, equine body worker and chiropractor, to help with assessing and treating horses for their optimal health and mental well-being.

One of Sue’s major points of focus is to get to know each horse as an individual from the standpoint of physical health, character, training and suitability, so she can represent each horse accurately for the most effective sales approach.  Communication and honesty are the keys to working with all components of the multi-faceted task of marketing horses.

Waltzing Horses’ inventory is diverse with horses of all ages, breeds and disciplines and suitability for dressage and jumping. Sue purchases some sales prospects and she welcomes questions about that and buying, selling, rehabilitating and/or training horses.
