New Year, New Name
San Fernando Valley Horse Show Association becomes the SFV Hunter-Jumper Association.

Kathy Busfield, president of The San Fernando Valley Horse Show Association, announced that the Board of Directors voted to change the association’s name to San Fernando Hunter- Jumper Association to streamline and better show the focus of the association. The name change was announced to the general membership at the awards banquet held Jan. 11 at Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia and it is effective immediately for membership renewal.

The San Fernando Medal Finals, which were expanded this year with the addition of a 2’6” medal class for riders 13 and over, will be staged again this year at the very successful Camelot Classic. More than 250 horses and riders competed this past October at the historical Earl Warren Show Grounds in Santa Barbara. Raizy Goffman, horse show manager, says competitor feedback was 100 percent positive on the Santa Barbara venue. One additional benefit to having the show there was that the motel and lodging owners were very generous about passing out half-price dinner coupons and other special offers. One morning, leaving the Ramada with a handful of money-off coupons, Raizy had to laugh, saying, “This is great, but don’t they know we’ve got to have some time between eating to actually do some horse showing.”

Exhibitors who qualify by attending and earning points in San Fernando Hunter-Jumper Association sanctioned horse shows will vie for specially designed silver Championship buckles and Reserve Championship halter plates at the Camelot Classic. The show not only hosts the medal class finals, it is also the official Championship show as an overlay on the regularly held divisions. Thus riders compete for Show Championships and the beautiful San Fernando Championship silver belt buckles and silver halter plates.

At the SFVHSA year-end banquet, Pamela Wildermuth, the renowned equestrian artist, again did the portraits for the Year End High Point winners. Her works capture not just the likeness of the horse but there is something uncanny, according to Lisa Winn, SFHJA board member, about how she “gets the true personality of the horse.” The mainstay of the Association’s program, the year-end awards for riders and horses who have accrued points over the show year, will continue with Santa Anita Race Track being the site of the banquet. Banquet presentations were scheduled to finish before the races started and the members were invited to spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the races. Every year since the banquet has been held there, a race has been named after the association and the Association President and some of the Board Members have been invited to go to the Winner’s Circle to present the trophy to the winner. “What better finish to the end of a year of horse showing than to go to Santa Anita and pay homage to more winners,” comments board member Jane Shaw about the year-end banquet venue.
