EquiMedic USA
Equine first aid kits provide safety
and peace of mind.

by Kathleen Burke Jensen

EquiMedic USA is based in South Dakota and provides a wide variety of quality first aid kits, available on its website, for both horse and rider. The company was created by horsewoman Sharon Baker and her two accomplished daughters Delaney Selander and Kelsey Baker.

“My kids rodeo and it used to surprise me how many people went down the road without any supplies,” says Sharon of the company’s origins. Word got around that she kept a good assortment of supplies and other riders would come to her when they needed something. “I had an old brown duffle bag and had all the items thrown in there and so often you need something quick. Well, all the small things sift to the bottom and I’d dump it out to find something.” Sharon realized there was a real need for equine first aid kits. “Designing the bags was half of the satisfaction for me.”

The EquiMedic kits are designed to manage the emergency health care needs of a horse. The design is easy to use and accommodates a broad assortment of treatment options. Sharon expects the customer will reorganize the bag their own way but she points out that the smaller items are hand packed into individual plastic bags to keep them organized and clean. The kit bags themselves are waterproofed with vinyl lining and they wash up well in the washing machine. “So often as I was growing up around horses you’d see a few first aid items hanging around with dirt on them,” Sharon says.

The medical kits are rated based on the number of horses each one can accommodate and they are available in a variety of designs to meet the specific needs of each customer. Sharon invites prospective customers to visit their website to find the kit style and size that best fits their individual needs.

The EquiMedic first aid kits also include some personal first aid items, especially in the Trail Riding line. Trail riding creates its own set of unique circumstances and in the event of a medical emergency for either horse or rider, it is critical to have fast access to first aid supplies. “Thank you so much for getting my horn bag trail first aid kit to me so promptly,” writes Rita D. Miller of San Francisco. “I have it all loaded in my saddlebags and ready for emergencies.”

For customers who already have a gear bag that well suits their needs, EquiMedic offers individual supplies. Additional options are the “build your own” version and the ability to add items to an existing kit. Maurice Hart III was shopping for a Christmas present for his wife when he discovered the EquiMedic Small Complete Barn Kit. “It’s real hard to find a first aid kit for horses that’s worth a flip,” Maurice says. “I’ve seen yours and it’s great!”

Until The Vet Arrives

All of the EquiMedic kits are designed to be larger than necessary to accommodate the standard kit contents so that customers can add the products that they already have at home. If customers need certain types of custom treatments for their horses there is room in the EquiMedic kit to store these items as well. Keri O’Neil of Cave Creek, AZ says, “I own a Small Barn Kit and I love the peace of mind it offers; everything I need is within reach during emergencies and routine wound dressings.”

Sharon knows that first aid kits are one of those items that horse owners often intend to have on hand, but the reality is it takes time to purchase all the items and often they go out of date or get dusty in the barn. “For the more sophisticated kits you’d have to go to a drug store, a discount store, several different types of horse supply stores and there will still be some things the average consumer can’t get their hands on unless they know someone at a medical supply store,” Sharon explains. “It makes sense to go to our website instead and enjoy one-stop shopping for everything you need.”

These are not veterinary bags, Sharon points out. They are meant to augment the horse owner’s ability to deal immediately with an injury, sickness or wound until the vet arrives. A first aid kit is an investment and a kind of insurance policy.

“We hope they never have to use it,” Sharon says.
