Once again, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center was an exciting place to be on the last Saturday in December. That’s when the equestrian participants from the 2008 Tournament of Roses Parade put on a grand pre-parade exhibition showcasing a variety of beautiful breeds as well as talented riders, skilled performers, historical reenactments and colorful drill teams.

Exhibits, displays, vendors and food stands surrounded the Equidome as the near-capacity crowd inside cheered the medieval jousting, western roping, trick riding and other demonstrations of skill and technique. The show was sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, which brought a couple of its famous four-horse stagecoaches outfitted with drivers and riders in typical 19th Century attire. Actor and KKGO disc-jockey Shawn Parr served as the celebrity announcer. The open paddocks around the Equidome were used as warm-up rings for the performers, offering spectators a close-up look at the horses and their dazzling tack.

Among the many participants were the All-American Cowgirl Chicks who thrilled the audience with daring trick riding on galloping horses. USC’s equine mascot, Traveler, also made an appearance with his Trojan rider. The famous Budweiser Clydesdales demonstrated how an eight-horse team of 18-hand, 2,000-pound creatures can work together in perfect harmony. Among the other specific breeds represented were the Andalusian, Peruvian Paso, American Miniature, American Saddlebred and the wonderful American Bashkir Curly horse with its unusual curly coat.

The 16-member Hermanos Banuelos Charro Team arrived wearing their elaborately embroidered traditional suits. Other fully costumed historical demonstrations were provided by the California State Firefighter’s Association with its 1901 fire-wagon, Medieval Times with a reenactment of an 11th Century tournament, and the New Buffalo Soldiers showing the contributions of black men during the post-Civil War period.
