West Coast Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association teams brought rays of California sunshine to the 50th anniversary party that was the National Hunt Seat Championships May 4-7. The venue was the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY and our riders made the cross-country trip worthwhile with good ribbons, rides and sportsmanship.

Cardinal Clout: Stanford riders celebrate a very impressive third place overall finish in Kentucky. In the team’s 12-year existence, “We have won our Regional and Zone championship each year, against some amazing teams, and been proud to represent the West Coast at the National Finals,” says head coach Vanessa Bartsch. And that’s with team members juggling unusually impressive academic loads and extracurricular activities. From left at this year’s Nationals are Vanessa, assistant coach Tina Davey, Cecilia Lang-Ree, Claire Womack, Carah Alexander, Kristen Blomstrom, Caroline Soane, Nicole White, Kelsi Okun, Corinne Miller and assistant coach Gwyn Gordon.

Trojan Top 10: University of Southern California equestrian team members celebrate their overall 10th-place-tie finish. 'This was our fourth consecutive Regional championship, second reserve Zone championship, second Nationals appearance, and first top 10 finish at Nationals,' reports Kathryn Griffiths, coach and owner of Sunset Equine Farm in the Los Angeles area’s Shadow Hills, where the Trojan equestrians are based. From left are Jackie Marks, Lindsay Levine, Emma Krenzke, coach Kathryn and her baby Adeline, Samantha Schroff and Emilie Frede.

Danielle Forester

Ashleigh Davis

Fightin’ Titans: Cal State Fullerton’s team has sent riders to the Nationals for four years in the past, but this was the first trip there for Danielle Forester and Ashleigh Davis. Danielle, a senior, qualified to compete in the Open Fences, where she finished 8th, and in the Cacchione Cup. Ashleigh has only been riding for about one year and was thrilled to finish in the top 10 in the Individual Walk Trot Equitation. “It was an amazing opportunity for me!” she reports.

UC Davis’ Aggies sent Stephanie Whitworth to the Nationals, where she finished 10th in the Open Equitation on the Flat. For more information on the Interscholastic Horse Shows Association, visit www.ihsainc.com.
