Dark Horses is the latest from New York Times bestselling author of Gossip Girl, Cecily von Ziegesar. Her inspiration for this book is drawn from her keeping and riding horses for many years.

What makes this book different is that it is written in the alternating point of view of the characters Merritt, a troubled teenager and Red, a terrifying racehorse. This allows the story to develop in a more detailed way because the reader gets to hear two different opinions on other characters and the situations they experience together. It is easy to empathize with the characters because the format allows the reader to understand their actions, even if they are not correct.

Both Red and Merritt have difficult beginnings. They meet each other at Good Fences, a therapy program for troubled teens. Mr. de Rothschild, Red’s owner, discovers that the pair works well together and decides to have them compete in hunter/jumper circuit. Soon they become successful and Merritt begins to become close to the people around her, but Red dislikes anyone who takes Merritt’s attention from him and will hurt them.

I enjoyed the development of the character Merritt because she showed that under the right circumstances people can become successful. There are many other themes that readers can relate to such as: parent-child relationships, romantic relationships, school and a love for animals.

I recommend this book. The exciting and complex plot contains many twists that will keep the reader so excited they will not want to put the book down.

Reviewer Joanna Fung has a lifelong love of horses and continues to ride when she can.
